Car Insurance Add-Ons Malaysia: Which Are Worth It? 2026
Special Perils, NCD Protector, Windscreen, PA coverage — which add-ons should you buy? Which are a waste of money? Complete guide for Malaysian drivers.
What car insurance add-ons are available in Malaysia?
Malaysian car insurance add-ons (riders) include: Special Perils (flood, landslide, storm — RM50-150/year, strongly recommended), Windscreen Coverage (RM50-200/year, no NCD impact), NCD Protector (protects your NCD if you make one at-fault claim, worth it at 38%+ NCD), Personal Accident (PA) coverage, Legal Liability to Passengers (LLOP), and Waiver of Betterment. The most essential are Special Perils and Windscreen for most Malaysian drivers.

What Are Car Insurance Add-Ons?
Car insurance add-ons (also called riders or optional benefits) are extra coverages you can bolt onto your base comprehensive policy for an additional premium. Your base comprehensive policy already covers own damage, third-party liability, theft, and fire. Add-ons extend this.
Since Malaysia's motor tariff detariffication in 2017, add-on pricing varies between insurers — compare them when getting quotes on Bjak. Some insurers bundle popular add-ons; others price them separately.
Not all add-ons are worth buying for every driver. Your car's age, value, where you park, and driving habits all affect which ones make sense.
Special Perils (Flood, Landslide, Storm)
Cost: RM50–150/year | Verdict: Almost always worth it
Special Perils covers damage caused by natural disasters: floods, landslides, falling trees, storms, and subsidence. Without it, your comprehensive policy will NOT pay out if your car is damaged in a flood.
Given Malaysia's annual monsoon season and recurring major flood events (December 2021, 2022, 2023), Special Perils is close to essential. The premium is tiny relative to the risk — a flooded car can cost RM5,000–50,000+ to repair or write off.
Who needs it most: Anyone parking outdoors, near rivers, in flood-prone areas (Cheras, Shah Alam, JB, Klang). Even if you don't live in a flood zone, you may drive through one.
Windscreen Coverage
Cost: RM50–200/year | Verdict: Worth it for most drivers
Windscreen coverage pays for windscreen and side/rear window repairs or replacement without affecting your NCD. A windscreen replacement typically costs RM500–2,000+ depending on the car model (ADAS-equipped cars cost more for calibration).
Without this add-on, a cracked windscreen would require either a self-pay repair or an own-damage claim that reduces your NCD. Given how common stone chips are on Malaysian highways, windscreen coverage pays for itself on the first use.
Tip: Check if your policy covers ADAS calibration — newer cars with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems require camera recalibration after windscreen replacement, which adds RM500–2,000 to the cost.
NCD Protector
Cost: RM80–250/year | Verdict: Worth it at 38%+ NCD
NCD Protector allows you to make one at-fault own-damage claim per policy year without losing your NCD. Without it, a single at-fault claim resets your NCD by one tier (e.g. 55% → 45%, or 45% → 38.33%).
At 55% NCD, losing one tier costs you an extra RM100–400/year for the next few years as you rebuild. An NCD Protector at RM80–250/year is typically a good hedge if you have 38% NCD or higher.
Who should skip it: New drivers at 0% NCD — there's nothing to protect yet. Consider it once you hit 38%+.

Car Insurance Add-Ons Malaysia FAQ
Yes, via endorsement — contact your insurer to add it mid-policy. However, some insurers won't add Special Perils during flood season or after a flood warning is issued. Add it at renewal to be safe.
