Third Party Car Insurance Malaysia 2026

What it covers, what it doesn't, and whether you actually need more

What does third party car insurance cover in Malaysia?

Third party car insurance in Malaysia covers damage or injury you cause to other people, their vehicles, and their property. It does NOT cover damage to your own car. It is the legal minimum required to drive in Malaysia under the Road Transport Act 1987. Third party insurance is cheapest — typically RM300–700/year depending on engine capacity. It is suitable for old cars (10+ years) where own-damage repair costs less than the premium difference. For newer or more valuable cars, comprehensive coverage is strongly recommended.

When to Choose Third Party vs Comprehensive

Choose Third Party if…

  • +
Your car is 10+ years old

Market value likely below repair cost

  • +
    Car value under RM20,000

Comprehensive premium may exceed potential claim

  • +
You park in a safe area

Low theft/damage risk reduces need for own-damage cover

  • +
You have savings to cover own repairs

    Self-insuring the gap is viable

Choose Comprehensive if…

  • Car is under 10 years old

Own damage costs are high relative to premium

  • Financing a hire-purchase (loan)

    Banks typically require comprehensive cover

  • You park outdoors or in flood-risk areas

    Need special perils add-on

  • Car value above RM30,000

Loss or major damage would be financially painful
